Instagram does not have one singular algorithm. Instagram says Feed, Stories, Explore, Reels, Search, and other surfaces use different ranking systems tailored to how people use each surface. A useful strategy therefore starts with the job of the surface—not a universal claim that Reels, watch time, or follower growth controls everything.
How Instagram's Main Surfaces Differ
- Feed: Instagram considers activity, information about the post, information about the person who posted, and interaction history. Predicted actions include spending time, commenting, liking, sharing, and opening a profile.
- Stories: viewing history, engagement history, and closeness help determine which stories appear higher in the tray.
- Explore: saves, shares, likes, post information, and past Explore activity help Instagram identify content a person may want to discover.
- Reels: Reels are a discovery surface, but their ranking should not be reduced to one completion-rate formula. Relevance, activity, content information, and recommendation eligibility still matter.
- Search: make the topic and account identity clear so people can understand what the content is about when they search.
Plan Content for the Surface
Use Reels when motion or demonstration helps a new audience discover the idea. Use Feed posts or carousels when the audience needs a reference, explanation, or sequence they can save. Use Stories for continuity and direct interaction with people who already care about the account. The format should serve the user's job, not merely chase a presumed ranking preference.
- Make the subject obvious in the first frame and caption.
- Use specific examples instead of generic motivational language.
- Invite saves or shares only when the content is genuinely useful for later.
- Review Account Status and recommendation eligibility when distribution changes sharply.
- Compare similar posts on the same surface before drawing conclusions.
What Not to Assume
Instagram's public explanation does not support claims that Reels always dominate, that completion is the single highest-weighted input everywhere, or that a recognizable format automatically resets or improves account classification. Those can be hypotheses for testing, not platform guarantees.
